The Stripy Wagon is a mobile cultural space that brings free, playful, and educational experiences directly to families living on social housing estates.

By repurposing a used ice cream truck—a universal symbol of childhood nostalgia—the project transforms underutilized estate courtyards, green spaces, and parking lots into vibrant, pop-up cultural hotspots. The vehicle is designed to unfold on demand, effortlessly converting into a mini-stage or workshop space for puppet shows, interactive storytelling, live music, and crafts. Designed to remove the financial, geographical, and psychological barriers associated with traditional cultural institutions, the wagon invites spontaneous, barrier-free participation right on residents' doorsteps with no booking required.

The project emerges from a critical urban urgency: the severe erosion of London’s vital social infrastructure due to skyrocketing land values, redevelopment pressures, and funding cuts. While England houses over four million people in social housing, investment in these communities’ cultural amenities has lagged, leaving families isolated and communal spaces neglected.

At the heart of the proposal lies a deeply collaborative and scalable methodology. Rather than dropping in a pre-packaged program, the team works co-creatively alongside residents and local civil society groups, using a participatory design process that empowers the community to reclaim ownership and pride in their public realm. Because it is free from the rigid constraints of traditional brick-and-mortar institutions, this low-cost, flexible model is inherently scalable and cost-effective. By bypassing the need for permanent infrastructure, The Stripy Wagon establishes an agile blueprint for mobile social infrastructure that can easily adapt to different contexts, estates, and boroughs—creating networks of playful, inclusive spaces wherever they are needed most.
