Carnegie Hill Residence
Location: New York City, NY
Area: 1,400 ft2
Status: Completed, 2020
Kasawoo was brought on board by a private client to refurbish a mid-century apartment unit located in the Upper East Side of NYC. Full interior design, project management and construction administration services were provided for this project.

Carnegie Hill Residence explores the many ways we gather within the boundaries of the home. How do we create an open floor plan while maintaining discrete zones for the family to come together? How do we create a sense of openness while creating a sense of belonging? How do we negotiate between the need for household utility and the desire for architectural clarity?

The deployment of “thick edges” as a formal device to
articulate the multiplicity of gathering spaces became the conceptual driver
behind this renovation. In the public areas, we deployed a series of C-shaped counter
height cabinets that organize the space into discrete zones for common family activities
such as eating and socializing. In the private areas, we utilized linear
millwork storage instead to anchor each bedroom with a place for working and
contemplating in solitude.
